Thank you Christy. My understanding of 'handfasting' is this: those who were able to officiate passed through towns infrequently and thus people had to wait to be married. By 'handfasting' they were given a year of temporary 'marriage' until it could be officially orchestrated.

The Pagans "handfasted" for a year (were wed) but I have yet to find the significance to that. Why did they chose only to be wed for one year and decide from their to part their ways? I have always thought that when this tradition was initiated, people didn't live long so a year to them may as well be 10 to us in this age.
I did not know they handfasted in February as a tradition, I thought the tradition was held during Beltane.
